Wales Becomes World’s First Fair Trade Nation
Local Labour AM Andrew Davies is today celebrating another Welsh first as it was announced that Wales has become the world’s first fair trade nation.
The announcement follows a two-year campaign by the Wales Fair Trade Forum, funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, to increase the availability of Fair Trade products in towns and communities in places like Swansea, and encouraging schools, businesses and other organisations to switch to Fair Trade.
Andrew Davies AM said:
“This is a remarkable achievement and shows that people, businesses and organisations across Wales are now taking fair trade seriously.
Fair trade is about making sure that we all play our part in encouraging sustainable development which offers better working rights and process for marginalized producers and workers in countries across the World.
I want to congratulate the Wales Fair Trade Forum and all those local volunteers in places like Swansea West whose work has made Wales the world’s first free trade nation.
Enormous progress has been made since 2006 when a number of targets were set for Wales to reach the Fair Trade Nation goal.
However there is a lot more we can do as consumers, communities and businesses and I would encourage everyone in Swansea West to buy fair trade goods wherever possible.
Further information about fair trade, and what we can all do to play our part an be found at http://www.fairtradewales.com .”
