Holocaust Memorial Day 27th January 2008.
The Holocaust Memorial Day began in 2000 and has been an annual event on 27th January every year. This date marks the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps Auschwitz-Birkenau by allied forces. Holocaust Memorial Day is the international day of remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust and other genocides. The day is about learning the lessons of the Holocaust and it is about tolerance, respect and understanding.
The day is sponsored by The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, a national charity formed in 2005; it is responsible for the National Commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day each year. This years National Commemoration will be help in Liverpool with the theme “Imagine. remember, reflect, react”
Andrew Davies AM Swansea West said:
“The Holocaust must have a permanent place in our nation’s collective memory. We should use this day to reflect upon the lessons learned from the Nazi genocide and make sure these lessons are translated into contemporary society.”
“It is important to continue to educate future generations of the causes and consequences of the Holocaust and other genocides. Victims of the Holocaust and more recent genocides must never be forgotten.”
In Swansea an event with live music will be held at Crowleys Rock Bar on Saturday January 26 starting at 20:00. Admission is £1.50 and all proceeds will go to the Holocaust Memorial Trust. Across a wider region, there will be many commemorative ceremonies, youth performances and related film screenings.
“Prejudice and discrimination are still prevalent in Britain today; we must use this day to remember the importance of protecting the civil and human rights of people in our society. We must take the lessons we have learned in the past to build a better future.”
