LIB DEMS' TAX PLANS UNFAIR SAY LABOUR.

LIBERAL Democrat plans for a local income tax are unfair and would hit Swansea's hard working families in the pocket said Labour AMs Val Lloyd and Andrew Davies.

The Swansea AMs blasted the Lib Dems' proposals to replace council tax with a local income tax in their Assembly debate today saying the plans would penalise key workers and local households.

VAL LLOYD and ANDREW DAVIES said:

‘’The Lib Dems always fail to tell the people of Swansea that their plans to axe council tax would mean leave ordinary families on average incomes up to £430 a year worse off.

Hard working families would see their income tax rocket under the Lib Dems' proposals and key workers like trainee nurses and teachers would be paying through their nose. These key trainee workers currently don't have to pay any council tax thanks to Labour.

Promising to scrap council tax might sound like a vote winner but in reality a local income tax would hit hard working families and workers on lower wages in the pocket.

This Welsh Labour led Assembly Government has already pledged to take action to help pensioners with council tax and we will be making sure we stand up for Swansea's families today by voting against the Lib Dems' proposals.‘’

Notes
Liberal Democrat plans for the 2005 election would set an average national local income tax at 3.75%. For a couple on average earnings with a combined income of £45,000 this would mean an increase in income tax of £1,358 a year. Compared to an average council tax per dwelling of £908 this would leave a couple on average earnings over £430 worse off.
