Swansea and Wales takes the lead in battle against life-threatening illnesses with new bio-medical centre.
Andrew Davies, Minister for Finance and Public Service Delivery, officially opened Swansea University's Institute of Life Science (ILS).
‘’This centre represents a new era in medical and life-science research for Wales, putting us at the cutting edge of the knowledge economy.‘’ said Andrew Davies.
‘’It will lead the way in using the latest technology to tackle some of the major health issues facing our society. The work carried out in this building will contribute to our understanding of cancer, obesity, diabetes and infections. It is a prime example of how government, academia and the private sector working together can help place Wales at the forefront of science and research.‘’
The ILS is based in a new, six-storey building on the University campus and is the culmination of significant joint investment by the Welsh Assembly Government, Swansea University, IBM and Boots. It will investigate the science of life, from the fundamental molecular aspects of diseases and treatments, through to healthcare delivery and the efficient practice of medicine.
‘’The £17.5 million we have provided to the ILS represents the single biggest investment by the Assembly Government in a University in modern times. It also illustrates once again how Wales is a major attraction for global blue chip companies looking to establish important research and development centres.‘’ added Andrew Davies.
Professor Julian Hopkin, Head of Swansea University School of Medicine said ‘’Our mission is simple - to develop a sustainable, interdisciplinary venture that advances medical science through research and innovation; and to translate those advances into benefits for human health and the knowledge economy. Our aim is that every discovery and opportunity will have a positive impact on the way we live our lives.‘’
The Institute will house a range of specially designed, state of the art research and laboratory facilities, as well as a dedicated business development centre focused on building long-term commercial and academic links and enhanced employment opportunities for the region.
