Andrew Davies raises the starting flag at the Wales Rally GB
Andrew Davies, Minister for Finance & Public Service Delivery, has raised the starting flag for this year's Wales Rally GB.
At the ceremony, which was held at the Cardiff Law Courts, Cathays Park, Andrew Davies said:
This weekend, the eyes of the motorsport world will be on Wales. The Rally marks the final round of the 16-round FIA Production World Rally Championship, which this year is celebrating its 75th anniversary.
Since 2000, this Rally has been headquartered in Wales and underlines our capability as a country to host prestigious international sporting events that attract a global audience. This year the event is forecast to bring £3.3 million for the Welsh economy, as well as a range of global business opportunities.
For 2007, Wales Rally GB’s service park has been moved from its out of town location to Swansea SA1’s striking Waterfront complex. Relocation of the service park will bring the rally up close and personal to spectators, while offering all the facilities of a city location.
The Millennium Stadium provides the venue for competition on the penultimate day of the Rally.
Andrew Davies added:
The Welsh Assembly Government is proud to support this demonstration of sporting skill and endurance by the world’s top rally drivers. Last year’s fixture proved the most popular event in the World Rally Championship, with 111 entries - and I am delighted that this year promises to be equally attractive.
