Breakfast Club Anger
Around 80 per cent of primary schools in Swansea are serving up healthy school breakfasts, according to new figures. But the city's two Labour AMs, Andrew Davies and Val Lloyd, have launched a stinging attack on Conservative AM Alun Cairns for suggesting that the service should be binned in Wales.
Mr Cairns claimed breakfast funds could be better spent in other areas.
They say Mr Cairns's attitude is opposite to that of the Conservative Party in England, which is fighting to keep healthy school breakfasts on the menu.
In a joint statement, Mr Davies and Mrs Lloyd said: "It's time the Tories dropped their opposition to free breakfasts and started supporting the most important meal of the day.
"We'd like to see Alun Cairns tell children and their parents about his plans to scrap this popular scheme.
"He should visit Swansea primary schools at breakfast time and see what a difference free healthy breakfasts are making there.
"It has been proven that a decent breakfast improves concentration in the classroom, pupil behaviour and attendance.
"Tory MPs in England can see the benefit of offering the service.
"It is typical of the Tories to want to scrap a scheme that largely benefits disadvantaged families. Only Labour can be trusted to stick up for the hard-working families of Swansea."
A total of 71 primary schools provides a healthy breakfast for those pupils who want to take advantage of the service, out of the 91 primary schools throughout Swansea county.
