Swansea West AM Andrew Davies has welcomed Welsh Labour Health Minister Edwina Hart's plans to give more power to hospital sisters.
A new task force will look at ways of giving sisters more responsibility over the way hospital wards are run including control over:
- Hospital meals
- Visiting times
- Ward cleaning and;
- Will look at introducing a new national uniform for nurses
Local Labour AM Andrew Davies said:
''Welsh Labour is committed to providing excellent standards of cleanliness and care in our NHS.
''These plans will look at ways of giving hospital sisters in Swansea West more power over the wards they run including issues around visiting times, hospital meals and cleaning to give patients the highest standards of care.
''Ward sisters play a vital role in our hospitals and it is right that we are looking at giving them more responsibility to get things done.
''This report will consider giving sisters more power over visiting times to ensure patients have enough time to rest and eat their meals.
''Issues like cleanliness and nutritious meals have important effects on patients recovery, length of stay and transfer of care which is why Welsh Labour wants to take a look at giving sisters extra power over these areas.
''And the task force will also look into a new nationally recognised nurse uniform so that anyone entering our hospitals knows immediately who is a nurse and who 'is in charge'.
''Welsh Labour has doubled investment in local hospitals since 1999 and waiting times have tumbled and Welsh Labour will continue to looks at ways of improving the standards in our hospitals to give local patients the care they deserve.''
